The New Croatian Orthography Manual – How we did it?

During the last three decades, Croatian orthography was in a constant state of turmoil: users had to choose between several orthography manuals which prescribed different rules on how to properly write certain groups of words and their forms. In 2009, the Croatian Language Teachers’ Association urged the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports to put an end to the disorder in Croatian orthography. Finally, in June 2012, the director of the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics proposed to the Scientific Council of the Institute to start a joint effort and to write a new Croatian orthography manual. It was meant to be an acceptable solution for all users. Fourteen authors worked on the text of the orthographic rules and the orthographic dictionary for eight months, after which a draft version of the orthographic rules was published in order to start an online public debate (April 15th – May 15th 2013). Some 400 proposals, submitted during the public debate, were analyzed and then accepted or rejected. The final version of the orthographic rules was approved by the Scientific Council of the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics. Since June 27th 2013, the new Croatian Orthography Manual has been publicly accessible online at http://pravopis.hr, completely free of charge.
